What is Organic?

Calling a product "organic" refers to the process by which the ingredients used in the product were created, as well as the strategic exclusion of certain types of ingredients that have been deemed harmful to the health of humans and the environment. Products that call themselves organic come from ingredients grown without the use of sythetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, ionizing radiation, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms. If any ingredients have come from animals, those animals should not have taken antibiotics or growth hormones.

To emphasize organic products is to place importance on the use of renewable resources as well as the general conservation of soil and water in order to preserve the environment for generations to come. It is emblematic of an outlook on the world that places people above profits and recognizes the preservation and environmental sustainability of our planet as an issue of the utmost importance.

Organic vs Certified Organic?

The label "organic" has to do with ensuring that fertilizers, sythetic chemicals, GMO's, and pesticides are not used in organic beauty products. The USDA's National Organic program mandates that products using the term organic follow a minimum set of standards. Many of our products adhere to even higher standards, and in an effort to distinguish themselves from products that are less organic, many have organic certifications from independent organizations. The label "Certified Organic" is a way to distinguish truly organic products from those that may not be.

For our brands, the term organic is more than a label: it reflects a sense of responsibility for the impact our actions have our company, our customers, and the Earth. The organic content in the brands we offer has been verified by world-renowned certifying organizations, including BDIH, Eco Cert, Soil Association, ASDA, Demeter International, and New Zealand Bio Gro.

What are the benefits of going organic?

Organic products are healthier for you, your body, and the environment. Synthetic products used in many personal care products, such as parabens and some preservatives, have been linked to various disorders and even cancers. Beautorium offers products free of parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, sodium laurel sulfate, and polyethylene glycol among others.

Another benefit of purchasing organic beauty products is the smaller environmental impact they have on the Earth. Buying organic reduces the use of chemicals - such as the fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides often used in the growing process - in our water, on our food, and on the Earth in general.

Buying organic means you are buying products from conscientious companies - companies concerned about the wider impact of their actions on the environment. This ensures that the products you buy not only avoid animal testing and forgoe genetically modified organisms, but focus on your health and the enivronment before anything else.

What are GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms)?

The term Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMO's, refers to the changing of the genetics of a living organism to favorably affect its characteristics. The concern with GMO's comes from the effect they may have on both human and environmental well-being, and much of the concern stems from the possibilities of what the future may hold - the long-term effects of tampering with the genetic materials of living organisms are simply not known for sure.

Currently, there is no system in place to distiguish products containing GMO's from those that do not. In fitting with Beautorium's earth-friendly mission, we recognize the potentially negative aspects of GMO's and the caution that must be taken with them - Beautorium's customers can be confident that their purchases contain no ingredients coming from genetically modified organisms.

What is the difference between Natural and Organic?

Organic does not mean natural, and vice-versa. Organic means that the ingredients are grown without toxins, chemical pesticides or herbicides, using sustainable farming practices. The soil is rich in natural nutrients and the farmers use renewable resources. Organic ingredients have higher levels of antioxidants and nutrients particular to that ingredient.

Natural means the ingredient is just that - natural. But that doesn’t mean it is organic, or organically grown. Lavender can be natural, but grown using pesticides, for example. We avoid ingredients that aren’t from natural, certified organic sources. If something is grown Biodynamically, it means that the oldest, most holistic methods of organic farming are used.
